The company behind the popular and arguably largest computer security software brand is Symantec.
Founded in 1982 by what the company calls visionary computer scientists, it now enjoys revenues of $6.2 billion (for the year ended April, 2009) and is number 419 on the Fortune 500 list of top companies. From its headquarters in California and from offices worldwide, it employs over 17,000 people.
Some $1.8 billion of revenue comes from the consumer market, the rest from businesses and enterprises, with the Americas counting for the largest part of its sales (55%).
Symantec is not just computer security of course, it also provides storage and systems management solutions to its many clients.
And the company believes that as the threat landscape is constantly evolving and its customers continually shift to adapt to new technologies and technology consumption, it is incumbent on them to invest in future growth areas. These include such topics as virtualization and SaaS that will help to reduce cost and complexity for its customers. The Symantec philosophy is to leverage internal R&D, acquisitions and innovations from its business incubator to enter new, adjacent markets that are relevant to its long-term strategy.
